The Curse of Future Tom – Day One

I began writing this blog on April 9th, 2010, with a public challenge to myself to post something every single day for a year. I allow myself any topic, any genre, and each post can be fiction, non-fiction, or something in between.

I’ve been writing for many years, and I’ve completed several novels only to put them to the side and simply start another. Sometimes I would stop writing entirely, for months at a time. All along, every book that I read about writing, every person who actually was a writer, kept insisting to me – you’ve got to write something every day.

Frequently, that’s exactly what I’d do, but it’s a hard commitment to keep, if you’re the only one watching. When you’re just dropping pages into a hard drive, it’s easy to let yourself slide – no one notices.

I wouldn’t say it’s easy, with everyone watching, but it’s certainly an effective motivation. I was pretty clear with myself and everyone reading from the beginning – if I ever stop, if I ever skip a day, if I ever decide to just let myself slide any time this whole year, well, that means that sitting in my office dropping pages in a hard drive is exactly where I belong.

So please take a minute when you have one, to read through anything posted here. You should be able to pick something at random, and if it draws from a previous post, there will be a link at the beginning telling you so.

Part of the point is to provide a wide range of emotion and subject matter, so you could easily wind up laughing or crying or getting a little bit angry. I imagine there are some duds in there – nobody bats a thousand.

Striking out is unpleasant, but it’s worse to sit on the bench all day, and you won’t find me there anymore. I’m publishing an anthology later this year, and a novel next year, and on April 9, 2011 we’ll all get to take a look and see what happened. My feeling is, it’s going to be something to see.

I have to say, after barely skimming through your blog, that I love your writing-style. I’m not exactly sure what it is about it; but I love it. This comment is just to let you know that I shall be subscribing to it; and that I will make the effort to go through the rest of your posts. XD

Cool – thanks! It’s not really about anything specific other than writing, but I do try to get a laugh out of you. Please let me know what you think as you’re moving along.

The real purpose is to market my book, which you’ve probably run across by now. I’ve been a little lax about getting the link front and center, but it just happened last week, way ahead of schedule.

      Thanks again for commenting!

    Dear Tom,

I am blown away by how much you write! My Tuesday and Saturday posts are hard to keep up with. Now that I’ve added a Friday post to help me stay on track, I expect to be really overwhelmed! JUST KIDDING. But, I don’t know that I would be able to write 800 words or more EVERY day as you do.

You are an inspiration, my friend! Please keep it up. I think I may be catching the end of the year you speak of, but I hope you will continue to post here because you make me laugh harder every day.

Yeah, stumbled across one of your posts on reddit. Amazing how reddit can actually give a blog exposure with one good run of people liking it.

Yeah, it’s great for the actual written word because a lot of sites are more geared for videos and photos. Reddit’s kind of driving me crazy right now though because they get so weirdly mad if I post my own link there. At first they flagged me as spam, but then I talked to them and they reversed that, and I backed off and posted about a half a dozen links and then last night another one of mine, which the mods all instantly buried by voting it down.

When other people post my links, they tend to be pretty popular, so I certainly appreciate it when you find one you like – that’s what Reddit’s for.

Still, the idea that everywhere I go on these sites I’m supposed to pretend like I’m not trying to expose my blog – it’s pretty frustrating and strikes me as a little juvenile. They have plenty of space over there and it’s not like I’m selling credit repair services or something.

Anyway, I appreciate your comments Robert – talk to you pretty soon.

Love your challenge – nothing like external pressure to get you motivated!
    Happy to be connected.
Some good writing here. Am reading…will take awhile.

Welcome Eden and yes, I’m afraid it’ll take awhile – there are about a total of a thousand pages up here now. Thank you for reading and commenting and I hope to hear from you soon!
